Are You Ready for Lecture Capture?

Lecture capture is a broad term describing any technology that allows teachers to record their seminars and lectures and make it available digitally. It is gaining popularity as it has been widely used as a means to provide self-paced learning outside traditional classrooms. It also facilitates flipped learning and enables students’ self-study by previewing the lecture videos before the lesson or reviewing them afterwards. In producing such educational videos, teachers may ask, “What are the effective presentation skills for delivering the lecture through the camera lens?”

In response to this question, Centre for Learning and Teaching (CLT) invited Mr Ho Yuen Tung, Anthony, a performer to host a workshop on “Enhancing Your Presentation for Lecture Capture” in early February. This workshop aimed to prepare teachers for lecture recording in a more confident manner by enhancing their presentation skills and enriching their knowledge in educational video production.

According to Anthony, video production is fun and simple but in teachers’ perception, video shooting is not. Some teachers would have an unrealistic expectation that they could shoot the video in one take, which gives them unnecessary pressure. Anthony suggested that teachers could divide the shooting in shorter segments and use editing to make a seamless video. In the meantime, retaking a shot is very common even for a veteran actor. Hence, teachers should neither feel embarrassed nor uncomfortable about retaking. A tip for teachers is that they could consider taking two or even more shots for the same segments, and select the best one after viewing. After the psychological readiness, Anthony shared the tips on other areas with the participants and the salient points are as follows: Costume and make-up: The choice of clothes and make-up should go with the theme of teaching topic. For example, a chef uniform would be a good choice for shooting a food preparation class. A simple make-up could help project a sharp image. Teachers should also avoid clothes which the colour is very close to the background for stand out effect. Speech and tone: Lively wordings in vivid tone are always welcomed by the young audience. Colloquial expression is preferred in Cantonese and English. Overuse of passive voice in English dialogue may make the educational video sound too formal. Facial expression and body language: Apart from the facial expression and body language, one thing teachers may forget is the magnifying effect of the camera lens. For example, a spot of stain could be eye-catching and a shake of hand could become a wave through the lens. Hence, teachers have to be aware of their clothing, their quirks and range of movement. If you would like to emphasise a point, a slight nod of head will do. Practice makes perfect, and there is no exception for video shooting. Anthony encouraged our teachers, “Recording yourself is a good exercise for identifying your quirks and pinpointing areas you need to improve on. Enjoy what you're doing. Shooting for educational video is fun, and meaningful to your teaching.” Dear teachers, are you ready for lecture capture?
