An Introduction to the Development of mini-MOOCs in VTC

Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) refers to an online course that is open to anyone, with virtually unlimited enrollment. Courses are available through established e-platforms, including Coursera, Udacity, and edX. Some local universities, such as the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology have already launched a number of free MOOCs over these few years. Proposal for Piloting mini-MOOC in VTC As the trend of offering MOOCs goes global, Vocational Training Council (VTC) as the largest provider of vocational and professional education and training (VPET) in the region, has been developing her mini-MOOCs on selected trade-related modules since 2014. Mini-MOOCs would be a new horizon to explore in the area of in-service training as well as for VTC’s brand building and exposure to international audiences. The Progress of the Pilot mini-MOOC Projects A feasibility study of the development and implementation of mini-MOOCs in the VTC was conducted in May 2014 and it suggested the possibility and specific measures of piloting mini-MOOCs in the VTC. With the aims to provide data on learning analytics, enrich and supplement to full-time programmes, two mini-MOOCs (Building Pathology-Aluminium Window Inspection, and Introduction to Chinese Visual Art) have been developed. The two pilot mini-MOOCs were first introduced to the students studying Higher Diploma in Building Technology with Interior Design in Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Morrison Hill) (IVE(MH)) and the students studying Higher Diploma in Publication Design and Print Media in Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) respectively in the first semester of AY2015/16. In order to collect feedback from teachers and students, questionnaires for both students and teachers have been distributed to review the two mini-MOOCs. The Way Forward As the development of mini-MOOCs becomes one of the initiatives of the VTC’s 3-Year Strategic Plan (AY2015/16 to AY2017/18), the Task Force on Massive Open Online Courses-Assisted Learning and Teaching has been set up to facilitate the implementation of MOOCs in VET programmes and review its implementation. Action plans such as providing seminars and training for teachers were proposed. Two new modules (Principles of Measurement (Construction/IVE(MH)) and Music Arrangement Basics (Communication Design & Digital Media/HKDI)) would be used for developing VTC's mini-MOOCs which are expected to be launched in Semester 3 of AY2015/16. Give It a Try Anyone who is interested in having a taste on VTC’s mini-MOOCs can register for the free courses here: https://minimooc.vtc.edu.hk/. Colleagues who are interested in creating a mini-MOOC are encouraged to approach Centre for Learning and Teaching (CLT) for support. To prepare colleagues for the design and curation of MOOCs, some tips on preparing MOOCs are available on “Tips on Preparing a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC)”.
