Free eBook: The Science Education Initiative Handbook

The Handbook is for institutional leaders, faculty and education specialists who wish to create or implement a department-level change initiative for broadening faculty use of effective teaching practices. It introduces the Science Education Initiative (SEI), a transformative initiative model which aims at changing STEM teaching practices in university settings.

This Handbook shares the wisdom of practice in implementing a departmental-based SEI, with reference to the successful experience in University of Colorado Boulder and The University of British Columbia. It focuses on faculty learning and course transformation facilitated by discipline-based education specialists, as well as the roles of initiative leaders and departmental leaders. By promoting the use of evidence-based teaching practices in STEM, the SEI influences the teaching of hundreds of faculties and their students. The SEI also focuses on changes which support the creation of “expertise-based classroom”, to guide students from novice thinking towards expertise in the discipline.
