About the Event :

Micro:bit is a tiny programmable computer, designed to make learning and teaching easy and fun!  This workshop aims to improve teachers' awareness and motivation around how coding tasks in the classroom can better engage learners and deliver subject content.  The facilitators will introduce participants to a variety of digital literacy activities that can be applied to their classroom and finally empower teachers with the basic skills and confidence to develop creative activities within their subject capacity.

Participants will receive a certificate from British Council endorsed by the Micro:bit Educational Foundation.  Coffee breaks and lunch will be provided in the workshop.

Mr Chris Austin , Micro:bit Teacher from British Council

British Council is a founding partner of the Micro:bit Educational Foundation. Mr Chris Austin teaches in Hong Kong and has done so since 2013. His teaching experience at the British Council Hong Kong ranges across levels and ages, but he has focused particularly on the young learners. He graduated from the University of Greenwich with a BA Honours in Creative Music Production and Technology. His TEFL qualifications include a Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults, a CELTA, a CELTA YL, and a TYLEC. His experience of teaching young learners in Hong Kong has highlighted the increasing significance of STEM in the young learner classroom and the growing relevance of technology as a vehicle for learning. As the father of a young child, he is heavily motivated to integrate new technology into pedagogy.

Intended Learning Outcomes :

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

• use variables as a way to store and retrieve data;
• use the basic micro:bit commands to create complex programs; and
• design simple animation and icons to tell a story
