About the Event :

Flipped classroom and other blended learning approaches have been more frequently adopted in the higher education field due to the more convenient access to online videos and other digital learning resources. However, designing a blended learning experience for learning and teaching (L&T) can be challenging. For example, teachers have to provide adequate and relevant feedback to students during and beyond classrooms. However, providing meaningful and prompt feedback requires teachers' time and attention to their students. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the fastest growing advanced technology category in various fields. In particular, AI adoption spans the global learning landscape and has been used in language, testing knowledge, experiential and tutoring. These systems can provide 24/7 support to teachers and multiple learners at the same time, with personalised support and guide them in an engaging way throughout the virtual learning environment.

Creating an AI tool from scratch requires complex computer programming skills but there are more and more AI-facilitated tools for learning and teaching. In this workshop, we would like to discuss the potential and affordances of AI in education with some examples of AI tools for classroom engagement and assessment. Having a taste on the free AI tools in this workshop, participants can reflect on better practices and design considerations in AI-facilitated learning and teaching.

Facilitator(s) :

Dr Leon Lei, Ms Sharon Keung and Ms Crystal Luo, Technology-Enriched Learning Initiative (TELI), The University of Hong Kong

Dr Leon Lei  is an E-learning Technologist in the Technology-Enriched Learning Initiative (TELI), HKU. He is also an Honorary Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, HKU. He plans, develops, evaluates and revises e-learning contents and solutions to scale up students' learning in the University, with using learning science principles and learning data for decision making. He also provides training for team colleagues as well as university teachers and staffs to support autonomous design and development of e-Learning solutions. His current research interests include learning analytics and smart learning environment. He is now a Senior Member of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the current Vice-Chair of IEEE Hong Kong Section Education Chapter. He is also a Member of Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).

Ms Sharon Keung has worked in project management, communications and research roles in non-profit and higher education industries in Hong Kong. She had previously worked on a Quality Education Fund (QEF) research project on Information Technology in Education in Hong Kong consolidating the e-Learning experiences from 100+ school principals, teachers and students. Currently, she is an Instructional Design Assistant in the Technology-Enriched Learning Initiative (TELI), HKU.

Ms Crystal Luo is an Instructional Design Assistant in Technology-enriched Learning Initiative (TELI), HKU. She has worked on course design, revamp and management of Small Private Online Courses (SPOCs) for undergraduate students at HKU, as well as the Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) for the public in Hong Kong. Simultaneously, Crystal carries out research mainly focusing on the adoption of flipped classroom, blended learning and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Higher Education. Her research output has been recognized and awarded by academic conferences and journals. She is a current member of Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia (HERDSA).
