About the Event :

The seminar tracks the speakers experiences and practices in imparting English to Korean students through the medium of technical engineering subjects.

Facilitator(s) :

Dr. Anthony Johnson is currently serving as an Assistant Professor on the Manufacturing Systems and Design Engineering degree programme at Seoul National University of Science and Technology, South Korea. He took the post in March 2014 having moved from the UK. His previous employment was as Professor at the University of Huddersfield, a post which he held for 28 years. Anthony is a design engineer of considerable experience having inaugurated several Limited companies to support his design consultancy work which covered several different industries.

His academic duties involved teaching design but also dynamics, Stress analysis, CAD, Mechanics, automotive, sustainability, business practice, IP rights and more. Academic management and student outreach were also among his duties. After years of teaching and consultancy Anthony gained his Ph.D in 2015 in the Application of design Techniques to Sustainability . Anthony is a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and was an Apprentice with the Royal Navy and is a time served precision toolmaker.

Anthony's teaching experiences both in the UK and especially in Korea have allowed him to develop strategies and techniques which follow the CLIL concept in imparting English through teaching technical subjects.

Intended Learning Outcomes :

Upon the completion of the seminar, the participants would be able to:

• describe the approach taken in imparting English through technical subjects ;

• apply techniques used in practice in imparting English through technical subjects ; and

• explain the knowledge and practices in imparting English through technical subjects at Seoul National University of Science and Technology .
