About the Event :

Nowadays, educators and academics often find themselves engaged in grant seeking activities when developing new projects and enhancing the existing ones. With the availability of various funding schemes supporting different target types of technology development, professional proposal writing skills and related preparation work are essential to successes in grant applications.

In the workshop, Professor Cheng will share the latest grant/funding application trend in technological areas. Preparation tips, proposal writing styles, and common mistakes will also be discussed. Through group discussion/activities, participants will be able to practise grant application skills for a technological project.

The workshop will be followed by an overview of the procedures relating to external grant applications and related project management in the VTC provided by Mr Mok.

Professor CHENG Ka Wai Eric and Mr Jack Mok

Professor Cheng is a professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the Director of Power Electronics Research Centre of the University. His research interests cover all aspects of power electronics, electric vehicles, electromagnetics, motor drives, renewable energy and energy systems. Professor Cheng has also actively participated in different research projects related to technology. He has published over 450 journal papers and 7 books and has received over US$10 million research grants serving as a principal investigator and many other grants as a co-investigator. 


Mr Mok is a Project Manager of the Quality Enhancement and Accreditation Office (QEAO), VTC.

Intended Learning Outcomes :

On completion of the workshop, participants would be able to

  • identify appropriate and available funding for a technological project;
  • discuss strategies to establish collaboration and handle Intellectual Property issues; and
  • evaluate the effectiveness of a workable proposal in a technological project
