About the Event :

The course “Using English as a Medium of Instruction for Teaching – Refresher” is organised by the Centre for Learning and Teaching (CLT), and offered by the Centre for Professional and Business English (CPBE), The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. This 18-hour course will help teaching staff develop key communication skills that will enable them to use English as the medium of instruction more effectively in their own teaching context. 

Major Focus of Session 2 - Lesson preparation:

  • Integrating content area aims and language aims
  • Identifying and activating key content language
  • Promoting interaction and higher-order thinking skills by attention to question design and task design
  • Checking students' understanding effectively

Daniel Barlow is a language instructor at the PolyU English Language Centre who also works as a training consultant at the CPBE. Daniel also provides training for academic staff on behalf of PolyU's Education Development Centre.

 

Daniel has over 20 years' experience in language and communication skills training and has been based in Hong Kong since 2001.

Intended Learning Outcomes :

The course aims to help teaching staff develop a range of specific techniques drawn from good practices in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and language teaching. We expect the participants to improve in using English as the medium language of instruction by using these techniques. 

Target Audience :

The course is designed for all teaching staff in teaching Higher Diploma (HD), Diploma of Foundation Studies (DFS), or Diploma of Vocational Education (DVE) in the Vocational Training Council.
