About the Event :

English is the language of global communication. Used well, English can facilitate quick, clear and exact communication. However, when English becomes localised, these benefits are lost. Even between native English speakers, dialects can destroy communication. Hong Kong's long experience with British English has resulted in a localised version of English – Hong Kong Chinglish. This can cause problems when dealing with foreigners, native speakers and local people. This workshop helps participants recognise Chinglish and helps them become more effective global communicators.

Facilitator(s) :

Mr Daniel Barlow

Mr Daniel Barlow has over 20 years' experience in language and communication skills development. He has been teaching and delivering training in Hong Kong since 2000. Specialising in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) techniques, Daniel has extensive experience designing and delivering teacher training to tertiary teachers in different subject areas.

Intended Learning Outcomes :

On completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • identify and overcome common sentence structure problems, and translation issues;
  • identify and correct common Chinglish errors with tenses, vocabulary, and set phrases; and
  • adopt proofreading practices that enable more concise and globally accessible writing.
