About the Seminar

Design thinking is a powerful tool for devising strategic interdisciplinary initiatives, promoting connections between concepts, methods and shifts of perspective that would be overlooked in a traditional ‘problem-solving’ approach. Originating in design industry, it has been broadly applied across different disciplines, and has been identified as one of the key competences required for the 21st century students. Design thinking, as a thinking process and application skills, will be introduced in this seminar. Please join us to find out how design thinking could be applied to address different sorts of problems.

Content

  • What do the 21st century students need?
  • Why design thinking?
  • How does “design thinking” work?
  • The design thinking process
  • Examples of application of design thinking in different disciplines

Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of this seminar, the participants would be able to:

  • define the key concepts of design thinking;
  • describe the design thinking process;
  • identify the relationship among design thinking, creativity and innovation; and

About the workshop

Design thinking is a powerful tool for devising strategic interdisciplinary initiatives. During the workshop, the participants will collaborate in interdisciplinary teams and experience a hands-on application of design thinking to a common problem. They will also explore through examples how design thinking has been used across many disciplines.

The teams will learn the design thinking process, techniques and tools to frame the problem and come up with an innovative solution with user experience desirability, technological feasibility, and business viability. Toward the end of the 2-day workshop, the teams will present their findings and share with other participants their creative solutions on selected problems.

Content

  • Day 1
  • Team formation
  • Divergent and convergent approaches (aided by DT techniques and tools) to problem framing and problem solving
  • Storifying the user experience with user journey mapping
  • Building prototypes for qualitative and quantitative user experience validation
  • Day 2
  • Overview of key technology trends that will impact technology model construction
  • The process of “prototype-testing-refinement”
  • Value creation through design thinking
  • Demonstration of using design thinking to solve problems of different disciplines

Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of this workshop, the participants would be able to:

  • review how design thinking has been used across disciplines;
